Audrey Street Houses | Sustainable House Competition Winner

The Olneyville Housing Corporation has worked with KITE on an ongoing basis to build their winning design for the Providence Sustainable House Competition on several sites in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence. Three variations on the basic house design have been developed to allow variety in both appearance and features as multiple homes are built.

The City of Providence held an open design competition was to provide model homes that could be built on typical building lots throughout Providence, and KITE Principal Christine West, AIA’s design was selected as a first-place winner. The basic design can be used to meet LEED-Homes criteria for green building, Energy Star Homes Certification, as well as Rhode Island Housing standards.

The basic design for the single-family house is modeled on Victorian homes found throughout Providence, and each version features an entry tower that gives the house a unique identity and encourages vertical air circulation to avoid air conditioning. The basic plan includes three bedrooms and two baths, with a Mansard version that adds a third floor with a fourth bedroom and bath. The compact size and numerous common-sense features such as high-grade insulation help make it both “green” and affordable to build and maintain.

125 Charles Street Renovation

The schematic design for the existing former mill building at 125 Charles Street in Providence included a complete renovation of the 4 story building as well as a substantial addition that connects across the Mossashuck River to the parcel’s existing parking area. The building is currently for sale and KITE would be happy to work with a buyer to modify the design to suit new needs.

Originally prepared for the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, the scheme reorients the building to take advantage of dramatic river views. After extensive site and cost analysis, the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island are now working with KITE to renovate a larger existing building.

The new imagery of the building is paired with major functional improvements and rehabilitation of the historic mill setting. The new bridge includes a green roof terrace and provides a lush outdoor educational space with amazing views of a hidden natural gem.

PPS Festival of Historic Houses slated for June 13

KITE is proud to be a sponsor of the Providence Preservation Society’s Festival of Historic Houses on June 13, 2015. To celebrate, we have gathered many of our projects to tell their unique and sometimes surprising preservation stories.
